Tropical Storm Flossie’s impending arrival on Hawaii island this morning has forced the closure of the county bus system and state courthouses on the island.

Mayor Billy Kenoi decided to shut down the county’s Hele-On bus system as of midnight Sunday as a safety precaution.

Also, the state Judiciary announced that state courthouses on the Big Island will be closed today due to the storm.

Court hearings scheduled for today will be rescheduled, officials said. The Supreme Court will issue an order extending by one day, any Big Island court matter with a filing or hearing due date of July 29, they said Sunday night.

All Big Island courthouses will reopen on Tuesday morning, while courthouses in Oahu, Maui, and Kauai counties will be open today as scheduled.

Also shutting down today are the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii Community College and YWCA of Hawaii Island’s facilities and offices.

The HCC closure includes the University of Hawaii Center, West Hawaii in Kealakekua.

Kathleen McGilvray, YWCA of Hawaii Island CEO, said “We are following the lead of Hawaii County, which called for all non-essential workers to stay at home. The sexual assault crisis hotline will be available as long as phones are operational.”
