10 displaced after fire heavily damages Ewa house

Ten family members were displaced after a fire damaged two bedrooms of a three-bedroom Ewa house this afternoon.

Five of the occupants at home at the time managed to escape unharmed.

One woman had complained of smoke exposure, and Emergency Medical Services responded, but she refused further treatment or transport to a hospital.

The fire began in a bedroom at the back of the house, causing significant damage, and extended to a second room, which caused moderate damage, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

About 25 firefighters responded to the 2:27 p.m. fire on Koalipehu Street, and the first unit was on scene at 2:33 p.m. The fire was brought under control at 2:40 p.m.

About 30 percent of the home received heavy damage, he said. Damage to the building was estimated at $80,000.

He said the soot and smoke throughout the house make it uninhabitable.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
