Honolulu police issued 90 citations during a Safer Roads enforcement operation in Ewa Beach at Fort Weaver Road and Kaimalie Street Wednesday afternoon.
Police said officers issued 31 cross walk violation tickets, 17 citations for seat belt violations, 11 for using a mobile device, 15 miscellaneous violations, 3 tickets for driving without a license, 8 citations for no insurance and 5 speeding tickets.
Last month, police announced that they will be stepping up enforcement of pedestrian safety laws at busy intersections after a spike in pedestrian deaths on Oahu.
There have been 15 pedestrian deaths so far, putting Oahu on pace to exceed the 17 pedestrians deaths on average per year.
Police will be stepping up enforcement of the cross walk law for drivers and jaywalking laws for pedestrians, Police Chief Louis Kealoha said at a news conference on July 23.
The law requires a driver to stop and yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a cross walk when the pedestrian is on the same side of the road on which the driver is traveling. The fine for violating the law is $97.
