Hawaii County detectives have reopened a 40-year-old murder case using new technology and an appeal for help from the public.

Police are re-examining the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Gayle Hook in 1973.

Hook, of Napoopoo, was reported missing on March 29, 1973 and her body was found on April 6, 1973 in an abandoned church pavilion in Napoopoo with a fatal gunshot wound to the left eye.

Police said the Hook case is one of several cold cases that detectives are re-examining with new technologies.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call or e-mail Det. Shawn Tingle at (808)326-4546 ext. 277 or stingle@co.hawaii.hi.us.

Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808)329-8181. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
