A 27-year-old spearfisherman apparently drowned Wednesday afternoon in waters off Pebble Beach in the Kona Paradise Subdivision in South Kona.

About 4 p.m., a witness saw the man diving below the surface of the water but did not see him surface. The witness then called 911.

Hawaii County fire rescue personnel brought the body in from the ocean after the Fire Department helicopter found it. The body was turned over to paramedics who determined the man was dead.
