Colorado man, 81, is 16th drowning victim on Kauai this year

An 81-year-old visitor from Colorado died after being pulled from the water at Makua Beach Saturday, Kauai County officials said.

The man, from Colorado Springs, was snorkeling at Tunnels just after 11 a.m. about 20 to 40 feet from shore when he was spotted face down in the water, officials said. Bystanders brought him to shore and began performing CPR.

Officials said lifeguards from the Haena tower were first to respond to the scene and assisted the beachgoers with CPR until Hanalei firefighters arrived.

Paramedics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

About 16 people have drowned on Kauai so far this year. Many of the drownings have involved tourists.

On Sept. 6, a 67-year-old Lihue woman apparently drowned at Kalapaki Bay. On July 25, a 54-year-old man from Seattle drowned at Lydgate Beach Park..
