Maui infrastructure tough for expansion, planner says

KIHEI, Hawaii >> A retired Maui college professor involved in planning issues on the island for more than four decades says its infrastructure may be have trouble adjusting to future developments.

Maui News reported today (http://bit.ly/1aPofWj ) that Dick Mayer, a former professor at Maui Community College, says community members need to have a voice in planning.

Mayer said more than a dozen planned projects will have effects on roadways, water and access to the coastline.

The projects include expanding the Makena Resort, a high school in Kihei and two residential developments of more than 1,100 units each in Wailea.

Mayer says traffic in south Maui will be severely congested if the projects go forward without building more roads.

County Planning Director Will Spence says the projects won’t all likely be built.
