LAS VEGAS >> Regulators say the weekend fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas drew the biggest gate ever in Nevada.

The Nevada Athletic Commission says 16,146 tickets sold for just over $20 million for the Saturday night bout at the MGM Grand Garden arena. That averages almost $1,240 per ticket.

Commission executive Keith Kizer said Thursday that the total eclipsed the $18.4 million earned from 17,000 tickets for Mayweather’s super welterweight victory over Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand in May 2007.

Reports said celebrities had trouble getting seats for the Mayweather-Alvarez fight, and some tickets sold online for $29,000.

Mayweather made a guaranteed $41.5 million, and Alvarez earned $5 million.

Only 50 comp tickets were distributed, and pay-per-view buys were expected to top $100 million.
