Hawaii surfer Carissa Moore finished third in the Roxy Pro France, but her hopes of a second Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour title remain alive going into the final event of the season next week in Portugal.

Sally Fitzgibbons, 22, won the Roxy Pro France, narrowly defeating fellow Australian Tyler Wright, 19, in 3- to 4-foot surf at Seignosse, Le Penon today.

Moore remains number one in the world championship rankings, but Wright is just 200 points behind her.

Moore defeated local French surfer Pauline Ado, but couldn’t beat Fitzgibbons in their semi-final matchup.

“Of course I’m bummed I wanted to make the final and have a strong performance, but that’s competition I just have to stay happy and focused and get excited for Portugal,” Moore said in a news release from the ASP. “I think the biggest key to winning in a place like this is being able to adapt very quickly cause it’s always changing out here. I didn’t find the waves that really built up and allowed for good surfing.”

Earlier in the day, three other Hawaii surfers lost their round 4 heats. Australian Stephanie Gilmore defeated Alana Blanchard. Californian Sage Erickson beat Malia Manuel and California surfer Lakey Peterson advanced over Coco Ho.
