No tsunami threat from 6.7-magnitude earthquake near New Zealand

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake off the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand did not generate a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Sunday.

The earthquake struck at about 6:55 p.m. Hawaii time about 50 miles northeast of L’Esperance Rock, New Zealand and 539 miles northeast of Whangarel, New Zealand at a depth of about  21.6 miles.

The Kermadec Islands are between New Zealand’s North Island and Tonga.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The tsunami warning center said based on available data, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
