A 51-year-old fugitive sex offender from Utah was arrested in Kapaa, Kauai, Friday by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

Michael Nielsen of Taylorsville, Utah, was being sought for parole violation.

The Marshals Service said Nielsen is a convicted sex offender who fled Utah and was located by task force officers at a residence on Haleilio Road in Kapaa, about 9:15 a.m. He was allegedly living under the alias Russell Pearson.

On Sept. 6, 2002, Nielsen was arrested and later convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in the first degree, one count of violation of protective order and one count of tampering with a witness/juror. The female victim was an 8-year-old family member at the time of the incident, the Marshals Service said.

Nielsen was transported to Kauai Police Station for booking pending court appearance and extradition proceedings.
