Multiple accidents on H-1 make morning commute a nightmare

Multiple accidents on the H-1 freeway’s townbound lanes between Waipahu and Aiea combined to make the morning commute a gridlocked mess Tuesday.

The accidents happened between 6:30 a.m. and 7:15 a.m., according to Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Yu.

One accident occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. on the townbound lanes near the Pearl City offramp in Waipahu. Shortly after 7 a.m., two separate collisions happened in Aiea and in Waipahu.

Fifteen minutes later, police reported another accident near the Kunia onramp in Waipahu, according to HPD’s traffic information website.

And a stalled vehicle on H-1 near Waimalu before 7 a.m. exacerbated traffic congestion.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the accidents.

Many commuters vented their frustration on Twitter, describing commutes that were twice as long as usual. Several reported taking more than an hour just to go a couple of miles.
