State forecast calls for Kauai to lead counties in job growth

Kauai County is expected to lead the state in job growth through 2020, according to a forecast released today by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Kauai’s projected job growth rate of 15.4 percent from 2010 through 2020 is slightly higher than Maui County, where jobs are forecast to grow by 15.1 percent during the same period.

Job growth in expected to reach 14.8 percent in Hawaii County and 10.5 percent in Honolulu County, according to the report.

The construction industry is forecast to achieve the strongest job growth in nearly all counties. The 10-year growth rate forecast is 31.4 percent for Honolulu County, 30.2 percent for Maui County, 29.7 percent for Hawaii County and 23.2 percent for Kauai  County.

Other industries that are expected to experience strong job growth are education and health services, as well as tourism, according to the report.

Job growth is forecast to be slowest in the government, manufacturing, information and natural resources sectors.
