20131017-0822 EDT UH LAB GARDEN The University Laboratory School (a public charter school located on the UH campus) has several gardens on campus. Miki Tomita leads the class that takes care of the gardens. Occasionally, these gardens are robbed (or crops and or equipment) or vandalized. How the teachers and students confront, cope with and bounce back from these events is part of an Insight piece we are working about agricultural theft on Oahu. This is (l-r) Noah Tsuruda (16), Baylee Jackson (16), Kai Melton-Kitagawa (16) and Michelle Au (17, seated) tending the garden. Noah, Baylee and Michelle are harvesting Malabar spinach. Miki said she'll put it in her pasta sauce she'll make for her students. Michelle said she cooks it like regular spinach. PHOTO BY DENNIS ODA. OCT. 17, 2013.
