The Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 101-85 in an exhibition tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday, but in the process may have lost a key player for an extended period.

Senior guard Brandon Spearman went out with a right ankle injury mere seconds into the game when his foot got trapped under a Seasiders player on the center court jump ball. He returned to the UH bench in the second half on crutches.

UH coach Gib Arnold called it a high ankle sprain, adding Spearman would get an MRI on Friday.

“We had to adapt to that. We’ll see tomorrow. He’ll be back. it’s just a matter of when,” Arnold said.

As an exhibition, the result did not officially count. UH’s regular-season opener is Nov. 8 vs. Tennessee State in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic.

Senior forward Christian Standhardinger led the Rainbow Warriors with 27 points on 8-for-19 shooting, while junior guard Garrett Nevels added 24 on 11-for-17 from the field. Junior point guard Keith Shamburger had 11 assists.

Jerome Harris had 15 points to lead BYUH.
