A 31-year-old Waianae man was killed early Tuesday morning in Maili after he lost control of the pickup truck he was driving and it flipped over, hitting a telephone pole.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the driver as Edward Aipa.

Police said Aipa was believed to be speeding on Paakea Road about 0.7 of a mile east of Maili Beach Park around 2 a.m. Emergency Medical Services said the victim was dead when paramedics arrived on the scene.

The driver was heading west on Paakea Road when the truck climbed the embankment and hit several boulders and a telephone pole before flipping over.

The accident marks 51st traffic death on Oahu this year, compared to 53 during the same period a year ago.
