A city contractor will remove today a diseased banyan tree growing from a planter in the middle of the parking lot shared by the Kailua Library and Kailua District Park.

Municipal arborists working for the city’s Division of Urban Forestry said the tree’s health has declined due to an insect infestation.

A city spokesman said the tree was removed because of the threat of falling branches.

The city intends to replace the tree.
