Army soldiers help repair Big Island boat harbor

KEAUHOU, Hawaii » Oahu-based soldiers have been helping repair parts of Keauhou Small Boat Harbor damaged by tsunami two years ago.

Soldiers from the 7th Engineer Dive Detachment in the 130th Engineering Brigade received training in port construction and rehabilitation by helping repair the Big Island harbor over the past three weeks.

The soldiers and contractors from Sea Engineering Inc. poured a concrete jacket around exposed steel pilings and repaired the harbor’s bulkhead.

They finished the repairs Thursday and flew back to Oahu on Friday.

The unit performs reconnaissance, demolition and salvage missions underwater throughout the Pacific.

The harbor was damaged by tsunami generated when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan in March 2011.
