A massive tree fell onto Beretania Street this morning and blocked all but one lane of traffic near Banyan Tree Plaza.

Branches from a massive banyan tree fell onto Beretania Street Sunday morning and blocked all but one lane of traffic in front of its namesake Banyan Tree Plaza condo, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

The tree fell just before 8 a.m., and no injuries or damages were reported, Capt. James Todd of HFD said.

Todd said it’s not clear what caused the branches to fall. A captain on-scene said the branches didn’t appear to be rotted.

Todd said it’s fortunate the accident didn’t happen on a weekday when the area is packed with commuters at that time of the morning, Todd said.

The tree blocked about four lanes of the five-lane roadway, including one lane for parking, when it first fell. Todd said Firefighters worked to clear debris to reopen more lanes for cars.
