Hilo man dies after losing control of car in early-morning crash

A 40-year-old Hilo man died early this morning when he lost control of his car and struck a fence and a building.

Hawaii County police identified the driver as Tracy S. Pack.

Police said they believe speed and alcohol contributed to the 1:49 a.m. crash which occurred 180 feet north of the intersection of Kinoole and Puainako streets in downtown Hilo.

South Hilo patrol officers said the victim was driving a 2006 Mercedes Benz four-door sedan south on Kinoole Street when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, stuck a chain-link fence and a building. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Pack was pronounced dead at 4:28 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

This is the second traffic fatality in Hawaii County this year, compared with none at this time last year.
