Freshman Heather Morales threw her second straight shutout in the University of Hawaii softball team’s 7-0 win over Delaware tonight in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic. The Rainbow Wahine then lost to UCLA 7-2 in eight innings in a game that ended after midnight.

Morales held Delaware to two hits while striking out three and walking three in the complete-game victory at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH scored in all but one inning starting with Leisha Li’ili’i’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the first inning.

The Wahine added three more runs in the second on Jazmine Zamora’s looping single into shallow left field with the bases loaded. Zamora’s single scored Lindsey Willmon from third and Kaile Nakao and Kayla Wartner came around on Delaware throwing errors.

Kristina Akiona had doubled in her final two at bats of the game and drove in UH’s final run in the sixth inning.

In the final game of the day, No. 16 UCLA rallied for a run with two out in the top of the seventh then added six more in the eighth to thwart UH’s upset bid with a 7-2 win.

UH sophomore Loie Kesterson and UCLA’s Paige McDuffee took dual shutouts into the sixth inning with McDuffee retiring the first 15 batters she faced.

UH freshman broke up the perfect game with a home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, giving UH a 1-0 lead.

Kesterson got a ground out to start the top of the seventh and Gracie Goulder followed with a single. Gabrielle Maurice reached on a fielder’s choice when Goulder was called out for colliding with Zamora as the UH second baseman attempted to field the grounder.

Ally Carda then lifted a fly ball to right that glanced off the glove of Keiki Carlos, allowing the tying run to score.

McDuffee stranded a runner in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. and the Bruins broke away with six runs in the eighth.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Bruins started the eighth with a runner on second. After a sacrifice, Mysha Sataraka broke the tie with a double to right center. Alyssa Tiumalu followed with a two-run homer and Delaney Spaulding later capped the outburst with a two-run double.

McDuffee got the final out at 12:45 a.m. and UH will be back at the field at 8:30 Saturday morning.

UH (2-1) will be the second seed in the tournament bracket on Saturday and will face Hampton (1-2) at 10 a.m.

UCLA (3-0), the top seed, faces Delaware (0-3) at noon. The third place game is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the championship at 4.
