Hawaii island and federal firefighters rescued a lost bird watcher early Saturday morning in Kaumana, the Hawaii island fire department said.

The man, 65, who was visiting the island, entered the forest near the 22-mile marker on Saddle Road to go bird watching about 6:30 a.m. Friday. He hiked until 10:30 a.m. and got lost.

Eleven county firefighters and two federal firefighters from Pohakuloa Training Area responded just after 8 p.m. Federal firefighters found the man deep in the Ohia forest about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and escorted him out.

He was in good condition.
