FAA investigating minor plane crash on Molokai

Two Federal Aviation Administration investigators traveled to Molokai Tuesday to investigate a small plane crash that occurred Thursday, Ian Gregor, FAA spokesman, said.

The twin-engine Partenavia P68 Observer crashed under unknown circumstances at the private Panda Ranch Airport.

A man who discovered the damaged aircraft Saturday alerted the FAA, Gregor said.

The FAA investigators will examine the aircraft, review its maintenance records, conduct a detailed interview with the pilot and speak with the man who found the plane, Gregor said in an email.

Maui County spokesman Rod Antone said the plane sustained light damage and no one was injured in what he called a force landing.

“Federal regulators require an aircraft operator to immediately report an accident to the National Transportation Safety Board,” Gregor said. “The NTSB has not yet determined whether this event qualifies as an accident or incident. The categorization depends on the severity of the damage to the aircraft and whether anyone on board is seriously injured.”
