President Barack Obama’s proposed budget includes promised money for Honolulu’s planned rail line.
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation said in a statement Tuesday the president’s budget proposal for the fiscal year beginning in October includes $250 million for the rail transit project.
The money would be an installment of the $1.5 billion the Federal Transit Administration has agreed to provide the city for rail’s construction.
The current fiscal year’s budget includes another $250 million installment.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the continued flow of federal funds is vital to building rail.
Honolulu City Council Chairman Ernie Martin says the funding will strengthen the project’s position and keep it on track.
