Woman in critical condition after struck by car in Haiku

A 52-year-old Haiku woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition after she was struck by a car Monday night.

Maui police said the accident occurred at 7:32 p.m. on Kokomo Road north of Nehe Place in Haiku.

The victim was walking northbound on Kokomo Road and attempted to walk around an utility truck when she was hit by a 2002 Lexus sedan driven by 65-year-old Haiku woman who was not injured in the accident.  Her male passenger was also uninjured.

They were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and the car’s airbags did not go off, according to Maui Police.

Police are investigating if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
