From farm to table to app directory

If you’re a farm-to-table foodie or just a fan of farms and farmers, this website and app are for you.

» Name: farmstarliving.com and iOS app. The app is available for Android, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

» What it does: Offers a directory of restaurants around the United States that serve food from local farmers. You can also search state by state for farms that are open to the public and offer hayrides, mazes, petting zoos, bed-and-breakfasts, you-pick-it orchards and much more.

» Cost: Free

» What’s hot: I loved the "Farm Fun" section of the website where you can search for overnight farm stays, bed-and-breakfasts, cabin and tent stays. Even better was the ability to combine the type of lodging you wanted with the type of animals or activities you were interested in. I found a ranch in New Mexico where I could participate in a cattle drive and stay nearly a week. Maybe you want to visit a reindeer farm in Alaska during winter break? Too easy.

» What’s not: The app was crowded with not one, but two ads when I tested it on my iPhone 4S. I would prefer a paid version of the app without the ads and including pictures and longer descriptions of the farms.

» Worth it?: I was thrilled to find the website, but I won’t keep the app on my phone.
