State investigators seized two dozen frogs from a Manoa home on Thursday, including four poison dart frogs that were sent to Hawaii through the U.S. mail, the Department of Agriculture said in a news release.

The state Attorney General’s Office arrested a man in connection with an investigation into the possession of the frogs.

Plant quarantine inspectors confiscated several aquarium tanks from the home with about 20 frogs.

The owner of the home told KHON-TV that the incident was a misunderstanding.

He said he made a mistake and that he has always had permits for the frogs. He said the frogs were all legally obtained.

The Department of Agriculture said there are limited established populations of poison dart frogs on Oahu and Maui. However, the frogs are illegal to possess or transport to or within Hawaii.
