  • John Baljian, owner, firmly believes that good business will always fall back on providing quality service, working hard, and prioritizing customers.

In the 45 years since Al Phillips the Cleaner has been in business, locals have come to know the dry cleaning facility as a reliable source for their garment needs.

Owner John Baljian’s passion for clothes and working with the community has allowed him to live up to and exceed the Al Phillips standard of excellence.

“My philosophy and our policy is to be honest, work hard and do quality work and let our customers compare our work to other businesses,” he said.

For the past four consecutive years, Al Phillips has been named one of the best dry cleaning services by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s “Hawaii’s Best” competition — a people’s choice award honoring businesses and services deemed the best in the state.

Baljian, who has headed the company for the past decade, credits the success of the business to the operation as a whole, saying teamwork and dedication spur success. Not only do the employees come into the shop hours before opening, but they also work well after the shop has closed — usually amounting to 20-hour workdays — to ensure that they live up to their slogan of being “quick as a bunny.”

Aside from its main office in Kailua, Al Phillips has expanded to include five more locations across the island, serving a total of nearly 6,000 customers a month. Services at each location include alterations, same-day service and dry cleaning specials on uniforms such as military, police and security guard uniforms.

“I love my job. I love the people I work with,” Baljian said. “It’s like a big, happy family and I am so happy we have this team that I created. We take on any challenge, anytime.”
