Two midrise buildings — a 95-unit condominium by Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Inc. (orange trim) and 88 rental apartments by Kamehameha Schools (green and yellow trim) — are part of a planned $60 million project in Kakaako called 400 Keawe. The white building is an existing office building that will be converted for retail use.
The Hawaii Community Development Authority has scheduled two public hearings on a proposed development permit to build a mix of condominiums and rental apartments in two midrise buildings on a half-block bounded by Auahi and Pohukaina streets, One Waterfront Towers and Keawe Street.
The hearings, which will be conducted in a contested-case format, are slated for April 30 at noon and June 10 at noon at 461 Cooke St. in HCDA’s conference room.
HCDA said that parties wishing to intervene in the hearing and participate beyond offering public comments may seek to do so by filing a written motion in accordance with the agency’s administrative rules governing contested-case hearings. The deadline to file such motions is 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The proposed project comprises a six-story condominium with 95 units and 145 parking stalls by Castle & Cooke Homes Hawai’i Inc., and a seven-story apartment building with 88 rentals and 165 parking stalls by Kamehameha Schools.
A 14,500-square-foot plaza and an existing 24,000-square-foot office building to be converted for retail use are also part of the project known as 400 Keawe.
Both residential buildings are proposed to rise 65 feet, which is the base height limit for the site under HCDA rules. However, Kamehameha Schools and Castle & Cooke need special permission from HCDA to build that high because the site is part of a Kamehameha Schools master plan that was approved in 2009 and is tied to a prior base height limit of 45 feet.
