The billionaire owner of most of Lanai island, Larry Ellison, plans to establish the Lanai Documentary Film Festival as an annual event.

Information about the event was posted Tuesday at the website: lanaidff.com.

The website indicated the first festival will be held next year and the schedule will be announced this fall.

The festival "will showcase short and feature-length documentaries and direct participants to take tangible action on issues that will impact the world," according to the website.

"We intend to cast the net wider than our fellow filmmakers by providing a platform for everyday people courageous enough to pick up a camera and share his or her story," said Audrey Cavenecia, a representative for the festival.
