Finally time for go! to go

Passengers aboard some flights of go! airlines on Monday might’ve thought April 1 came a day early — but alas, it was no joke. As the airline neared shutdown Monday night, at least six afternoon flights were delayed and an earlier flight was canceled due to mechanical issues.

It was an inglorious end for the upstart low-cost airline, which exited the Hawaii market after a rough eight years, in which many blamed it for "predatory pricing" that spurred the demise of Aloha Airlines. Options for interisland travel are now mainly Hawaiian Airlines, Mokulele Airlines and Island Air.

Passengers left holding go! tickets can seek a refund at www.iflygo.com; the site says it is currently processing reservations through April 15.

We’ll miss the gas pump, and the attendants

We’ll miss filling up the tank at Lex Brodie’s in Kakaako, where an attendant pumped the gas and customers got a discount for paying cash. Such excellent service made the weekly task a bit easier, but it wasn’t paying off for the company; the profit margins were just too slim.

So Lex Brodie’s is getting out of the gasoline business after 50 years. It will stick to repairing cars and selling tires.

That segment of the business is booming. Customer parking will be added where the gas tanks used to be.
