Nearly 4,000 gallons of sewage spilled out of a manhole in Wahiawa Saturday and went over a cliff and into a steep ravine.

The city Department of Environmental Services said the 3,720-gallon spill happened just before 1:34 p.m. because debris clogged a 6-inch siphon sewer pipe at 77 Karsten Drive. Crews arrived at the site at 3:03 p.m. and released the blockage at 3:35 p.m., the department said by email.

The crews cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area around the manhole. The state Department of Health was notified, the city said.
