Fire destroyed a cabin-style structure in Keaau on Friday.

According to Big Island fire officials, residents had just returned home around 5:23 p.m. when they heard what sounded like explosions and saw smoke coming from the 16-by-10-foot structure.

By the time firefighters arrived about five minutes later, the structured was fully engulfed and collapsing.

The fire was brought under control by 5:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported but the structure was deemed a total loss, with damage estimated at $16,000.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist with shelter and other needs.
