Personnel from the state Department of Transportation, Maui County Public Works and a private contractor cleared about 2,000 cubic yards of mud and debris that overran Hana Highway near Mile Post 14.8 on the Kahului side of Keanae on Friday.

The massive landslide occurred just before 6 p.m.

The highway was closed until midnight, when one lane was opened and traffic was contraflowed though the area.

Workers continued clearing sections of highway through the evening while state engineers monitored the hillside to assess its stability. The highway was completely reopened around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
