A composite satellite image shows scattered low clouds over the islands Friday morning.

A change in the winds is bringing muggy conditions with the chance of leeward and mauka afternoon showers and vog to the islands.

National Weather Service forecasters said the cooling northeast tradewinds have been displaced by light variable winds that will turn southeasterly, bringing moist air from the south to the state.

Volcanic haze from Kilauea is also likely to move over the smaller islands beginning on Friday evening.

Light winds and humid conditions will cause afternoon clouds to build up over leeward and mauka areas, bringing scattered showers.

Forecasters said the muggy conditions will likely stick around into next week.

A weather system north of the islands has cut off the usual northeast tradewind flow and it’s not clear yet when the trades will return.
