Hawaii falls to Florida State in national sand volleyball semifinal

Fourth-seeded Hawaii lost to No. 3 Florida State 4-1 in the AVCA Collegiate Sand Championships semifinals Saturday morning in Gulf Shores, Ala. 

The Rainbow Wahine finish the season at 20-4. Their other losses came against the two teams playing in Saturday’s second semifinal: No. 1 USC and No. 2 Pepperdine (twice). 

Pepperdine, seeking its second title in three years, defeated USC 3-2.

Hawaii’s top two pairs — No. 1 Brittany Tiegs-Karissa Cook and No. 2 Katie Spieler-Nikki Taylor — will next compete Sunday in the pairs national championship. 

Tiegs-Cook are seeded third in the 16-team event and face Long Beach State’s Aigner-Swesey/Tordorovic. Spieler-Taylor seeded 12th, take on Jackson-Johnson also of Long Beach State.

The only match that Hawaii won against Florida State was at No. 5. Karlee Riggs-Mikayla Tucketer outlasted Sierra Sanchez-Hailey Luke, 14-21, 22-20, 16-14.

Other results were: 

1. Jace Pardon/Aurora Davis (FSU) def. Brittany Tiegs/Karissa Cook (UH) 23-25, 21-18, 15-12

2. Stephanie Pellitteri/Kristina Pellitteri (FSU) def. Katie Spieler-Nikki Taylor  (UH) 21-13, 21-19

3. Sarah Wickstrom/Fatma Yildirim (FSU) def. Ali Longo-Ginger Long (UH) 21-14, 21-15

4. Melanie Pavels/Julie Brown (FSU) def. London Chow-Olivia Urban (UH)  21-17, 11-21, 15-7
