UH softball team drops doubleheader at UC Davis

The University of Hawaii softball team opened its final series of the season on the short end of a doubleheader sweep at UC Davis on Friday.

UC Davis led throughout the Big West series opener and finished off a 5-1 win over the Rainbow Wahine. The Aggies then rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 series-clinching victory in the second game.

UH (21-28, 6-14 Big West) and UC Davis (21-32, 9-11) close the season with a single game on Saturday. The finale is scheduled for 9 a.m. Hawaii time.

UC Davis collected 10 hits and UH committed four errors contributing to three unearned runs in a 5-1 loss in the first game of the doubleheader.

UC Davis pitchers Dana Cruse and Andrea Reynolds held the Wahine to six hits and the Aggies won for the second time in nine all-time meetings between the programs.

The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the second game before Leisha Li’ili’i hit her 15th home run of the season in the fourth inning and Kaile Nakao’s sacrifice fly scored Lindsey Willmon with the tying run in the fifth.

Keiki Carlos broke the tie with an RBI single with two out in the top of the seventh, scoring Nakao from second.

Christina Guidry led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Christa Castello tied the game with a triple down the right-field line and scored the winning run on pinch-hitter Kimberly Pena’s infield single
