Night work on the H-1 freeway Pearl City viaduct will resume on Saturday into next week, except for Tuesday night in observance of the Kamehameha Day holiday, the state Department of Transportation said in a news release.
In addition, two lanes of the freeway in the same area are closed Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. as heavy construction equipment is moved into place.
The Transportation Department suspended night work this week after construction work last week caused huge backups on the freeway.
DOT officials said they would re-evaluate their approach to the lane-closures to better help traffic flow.
The lane closures next week will close the two right lanes between the Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) and the Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 8B) starting Monday from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., nightly, and last through Friday morning in the Ewa direction.
There will be no nighttime lane closures on Tuesday night, June 10, in observance of the Kamehameha Day holiday.
The two left lanes will also be closed Saturday night at 11 p.m. until Sunday at noon.
Nighttime closures are expected to continue throughout the month of June.
Night work next week will close the left lane in the town-bound direction between the Kamehameha Highway overpass and the Waiwa Road overpass at the H-1/H-2 merge Sunday night through Friday morning from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for the rail transit project.
Construction and lane closures are continuing in other areas along the H-1, including full closures in the Koko Head direction between the Vineyard Boulevard onramp (Exit 20B) and the Pali onramp (Exit 21A) through Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation also has a full slate of road projects, including construction on roads and highways in Ewa, Waipahu, Pearl City, Aiea, Kalihi and Downtown/Kakaako.
