A 76-year-old North Carolina visitor died while swimming in Kapalua Bay Sunday in Lahaina.

Maui police have identified the victim as Charles Hoover, of High Point, N.C.

Police said the victim was found floating face down motionless in calm ocean about 10 feet from shore at 2:27 p.m.

Beachgoers pulled him to shore and performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived. Medics and firefighters administered CPR and were eventually able to regain a pulse. Medics transported Hoover to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he later died.
