Man dies from injuries after collision on Molokai

An 86-year-old man has died from his injuries after a car crash on Molokai last month, according to Maui Police.

The victim has been identified as Harry Shimizu. He died June 4.

An 86-year-old woman was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, with Shimizu as a passenger, heading east on Mauna Loa Highway near mile marker 15 the morning of May 8. The woman struck a guardrail on the north side of the roadway, crossed the center line, went up an embankment and flipped over, police said.

Shimizu was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

Both vehicle occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, police said.

The use of speed, drugs, or alcohol is still under investigation.

This is Maui County’s 14th traffic fatality this year compared to eight the same time last year, MPD said.
