Unoccupied house fire in Hilo leaves $1,000 in damages

Big Island investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that left $1,000 worth of damage to an unoccupied home on Monday night near Hilo.

Hawaii County fire officials said light smoke was coming from a 2,200-square-foot, two-story structure when they arrived at 6:07 p.m.

The fire was brought under control by 6:25 p.m.

A passerby alerted a neighbor who called authorities.

Firefighters forced open a back door when they arrived. A small fire was located on the bottom floor near a bathroom, fire officials said.
