For 30 years, Red Wing Shoes has provided Hawaii’s workforce with safe footwear. The international franchise dates back to 1905, when it initially was founded to provide patrons with durable work shoes.

“We know work footwear,” says store manager Eleanor Sholtis.

“Our motto is ‘work is our work.’ So we understand work shoes, what goes into making a work shoe and what belongs in a work shoe.”

Located in Waimalu Shopping Center, the store sells Red Wing’s premium brand of footwear in addition to two subsidiary brands. It primarily caters to those in the construction industry, though many of its shoes also are necessary for other industrial settings.

“We’re not in it for the fashion, we’re not in it for the looks,” explains Sholtis. “We’re in it for proper footwear, proper fit and proper support.”

Unlike other work-shoe providers, Red Wing specializes in wide-width shoes. The store also often stocks up to size 16 in select styles, and can special order up to size 20.

Because of the varying and at times demanding environments in which its shoes are used, Red Wing also makes it a point to work closely with customers to ensure the correct shoe is purchased.

“We’re here to provide education, knowledge (and) the proper fit on footwear,” says Sholtis. “We try to guide customers as long as a customer is open to receiving education and guidance.”

Customers who purchase shoes from Red Wing also receive free reconditioning and shoelaces when necessary. Some minor maintenance is done in-store, while other repair work is sent to the factory.

Ultimately, Red Wing strives to provide customers with the best fitting shoe to help them do their jobs well.

“If you don’t have the proper fitting shoe, your feet aren’t going to be happy (and) you aren’t going to be happy,” says Sholtis.

“So you’ve got to have the proper fit on the shoe.”
