A Honolulu man fell 40 feet from the Kalihiwai Bridge on Kauai early Saturday morning.

A Honolulu man jogging near the Kalihiwai Bridge on Kauai’s north shore fell 40 feet and held on to a tree on the side of a cliff before he was rescued early Saturday morning, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

The 40-year-old man had been jogging on the makai side of the bridge at about 2:45 a.m. when he tripped and fell over the railing, said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert. She said the man used a cell phone to call a friend for help.

Firefighters from the Hanalei station responded and rescued the man, who had injured his left leg and shoulder.

Medics took him to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

Police closed Kuhio Highway from 3 to 4:45 a.m. while firefighters rescued the man.
