Kilauea man arrested after truck crash on Kuhio Highway

A 19-year-old Kilauea man was arrested early Sunday morning after the car he was driving crashed and shut down Kuhio Highway in Kauai for approximately two hours.

The crash happened at approximately 3:15 a.m. at mile marker 25 near the Kalihiwai Bridge.  The man was operating a grey Toyota pickup truck with two other passengers, a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old from Kilauea.  He traveling in the southbound direction.

The truck flipped on its roof after the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, Kauai officials said.

The driver was arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, officials said.

The driver and the two passengers sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

Kuhio Highway was closed between Kalihiholo Road and North Kalihiwai Road for two hours while police investigated.
