It may not feel cooler yet, but tradewinds will gradually return to the islands, National Weather Service forecasters said.

The northeast winds will strengthen through Wednesday and moderate to locally breezy tradewinds will likely remain through the Independence Day weekend.

Passing showers carried by the trades will favor windward areas, and will be most active during nights and mornings.

Observations showed the tradewinds starting to pick up, but forecasters said winds may still be light enough on Monday to bring seabreezes and some clouds and isolated showers over leeward slopes and coasts Monday afternoon.

The windward areas of the Big Island did not share the hot weather experienced by the rest of the state.

The National Weather Service said Hilo tied a low temperature record of 64 degrees on Sunday for the date. The last time it was 64 degrees at the Hilo Airport on June 29 was in 1999.
