A man who allegedly took a yellow school bus on a drunken ride on the Hana Highway before crashing it has been charged with several offenses, Maui police said on Monday.

Police said Otto W. K. Wolf Gramm Jr., 19, of Hana, was released on $3,000 bail on Saturday.

Police said a witness reported seeing the bus driving recklessly on the highway heading north near Baldwin Beach Park at about 11:32 p.m. on Friday.

An police officer attempted to stop the bus, but it sped off and officers ended the pursuit.

The bus crashed into a utility pole near Kaiholo Place in Paia a short time later.

The driver fled on foot, but witnesses called police after spotting the suspect and police arrested Gramm.

The accident closed Hana Highway as crews repaired the utility pole and cleared lines blocking both lanes of traffic.

Police said Gramm was charged with unauthorized control of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, prohibitions involving minors, reckless driving, inattention to driving, accidents involving damages and not possessing a commercial driver’s license.
