Lifeguards pulled a woman in her 40s out of the water at Yokohama Bay Wednesday afternoon, along with a man in his 30s who tried to rescue her.

The woman was in serious condition after swallowing water, but remained conscious after the 3 p.m. Wednesday incident, an Emergency Services Department spokeswoman said.

The man, a relative of the woman, went into the water to help but experienced exhaustion.

Paramedics treated the woman and transported the woman and the man to an area hospital.
