Moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Wali was moving over the Big Island Saturday morning, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for Hawaii island until 5:15 p.m.
The other islands are under a flood watch until later 6 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Monday, forecasters said.
At 2:16 p.m., radar images showed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the slopes of Glenwood and Pohakuloa.
Forecasters said rain rates were estimated at about 2 inches an hour.
Other locations in the advisory include Mauna Kea summit, Pepeekeo, Papaikou, Volcano, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Keaau, Honomu, Honokaa, Hawaii Paradise Park, and Hakalau.
“All the islands will be impacted by heavy rain … with the moderate trades still focusing the bulk of the rain over windward and mountain areas. Leeward areas, which are typically drier, do not require as much rainfall to see flash flooding, so the threat will encompass all areas of the aloha state through Monday,” forecasters said in a weather discussion Saturday morning.
Another weather system in the upper atmosphere west of Kauai is interacting with the remnants of Wali to bring an increased chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms, forecasters said.
“A gradual return to more typical trade wind weather is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, but may be short lived as the models show another slug of tropical moisture moving into the islands from the southeast during the second part of next weekend,” forecasters said.
