Tropical Depression Genevieve weakens south of Hawaii
A line of clouds from Tropical Depression Genevieve is approaching the Big Island as the storm begins to pass south of Hawaii Thursday morning.
Unfavorable winds are beginning to tear Tropical Depression Genevieve apart as the storm passes south of Hawaii.
Clouds and moisture from Genevieve were nearing Hawaii island Thursday morning, but the bulk of the storm is expected to pass well south of the islands.
Forecasters expect the northern edge of the storm to bring rains to the Big Island and Maui County Thursday into Friday.
“While it may not reach Oauhu or Kauai at all, (it is) more likely these islands will receive some of the clouds and showers by Saturday, though to a much lesser degree than Maui or Hawaii counties,” forecasters said.
At 5 a.m. Genevieve was about 550 miles southeast of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. moving west at 6 mph.
The forecast for Thursday calls for mostly sunny skies except for some windward and mauka showers and isolated leeward showers. Highs are expected to reach up to 89 degrees and winds are from the east at 15 mph with higher gusts.
