Saturday’s primary election to move forward

Saturday’s primary election will move forward as planned with polling sites expected to open at the scheduled 7 a.m. start time, state officials said.

State Attorney General David Louie, at a news conference this morning at Diamond Head Crater, said elections officials were in close contact with emergency responders and the National Weather Service and would be able to make adjustments if needed.

“Any decisions to deviate from the original election plans will be made based on the latest storm information and in further consultation with the county clerks, emergency management officials, and the attorney general,” the Office of Elections said in a news release.

Louie added that officials at Big Island storm shelters that also serve as polling sites are doing assessments now to determine if any sites would need to be consolidated. The chief elections officer has the power to consolidate polling locations in the event of an emergency.
